Agilent Technologies Acquires Remcom's 3D Electro-Magnetic Antenna Simulation Technology

SANTA CLARA, Calif., and STATE COLLEGE, Pa., Sept. 12, 2006 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) and privately held Remcom Inc. today announced that Agilent has licensed 3D Electro-Magnetic (EM) simulation technology from Remcom, a proven provider of time-domain 3D EM technology. Financial details were not disclosed. Remcom will continue to develop, sell and support XFDTD, which is based on this technology.

This multi-year agreement is an expansion of Agilent EEsof EDA division's strategy to develop an extensive 3D EM product line, which began earlier this year with the announcement and release of the Electro-Magnetic Design System (EMDS) 3D EM simulator.

While Remcom's Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) technology has many applications, it is currently used extensively for antenna design of wireless appliances that are constrained by mechanical design. Remcom's FDTD technology is proven in this application and easily integrates with mechanical CAD tools such as Parametric Technologies' Pro/Engineer. Because the technology can mesh an entire wireless appliance, such as a cell phone, it easily integrates into an engineer's design flow. Time Domain simulation technology is also ideally suited for multi-processor computers and compute farms, providing designers with dramatic time-savings.

"Since we announced our 3D EM plans earlier this year, customer response has been extremely positive," said Jim McGillivary, vice president and general manager of Agilent's EEsof EDA division. "Customers want choices that are not offered by today's 3D EM products. And they consistently ask for and expect Agilent to offer integrated and leading simulation technology in all areas, including 3D EM."

"We learned of Remcom's technology through its extensive use by a few of our industry-leading customers," said Charles Plott, product planning manager for Agilent EEsof. "Their technology complements the 3D finite element technology in EMDS as well as the 3D-planar method-of-moments technology in Momentum available from Agilent EEsof."

"We are excited to enter this multi-year agreement with Agilent because it will allow us to continue to advance the technology and support our customers in biomedical, optical, aerospace/defense as well as personal electronic device antenna applications," said Ray Luebbers, president of Remcom.

As a result of this agreement, Agilent will expand EM research and development activities in Ghent, Belgium, and expects to begin offering new FDTD products for antenna designers later this year through its worldwide sales and marketing organizations. Agilent also expects to offer investment protection options to customers who purchase EMDS between now and when a new FDTD product becomes available.

Today's announcement is part of a larger strategy to expand Agilent's overall high-frequency EDA offering with a combination of internal development, partnerships and acquisitions. This strategy is demonstrated by a series of recent actions, including the acquisition in August 2005 of Eagleware-Elanix, the leading supplier of easy-to-use, PC-based RF and microwave circuit and system simulation software; the July 2006 release of EMDS, the industry's leading price performance full 3D EM simulator; and the acquisition in August 2006 of Xpedion Design System, a leading provider of RFIC simulation and verification software.

About Remcom
Remcom introduced XFDTD in 1994. It has become a recognized standard in time domain EM calculations and has extensive application in commercial, government and research activities. In addition to XFDTD, Remcom has developed the companion product XGTD, a high frequency EM solver based on application of diffraction theory. Other Remcom products include the radio frequency propagation prediction tool Wireless InSite, and VariPose, which allows bio-electromagnetic calculations for human bodies in realistic positions. Remcom also contracts with government and private industries for research and development in applied electromagnetics. Information about Remcom can be found online at www.remcom.com.
