Agenda Now Available for ANSI's 2009 Open Forum for Standards Developers
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has released an agenda for the upcoming Open Forum for Standards Developers. The forum will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009, from noon to 5:00 p.m., as part of the World Standards Week 2009 (WSW) series of events in Bethesda, MD.
The forum is the fifth in a series of ANSI-sponsored events focused on bringing together leaders of both accredited and non-accredited standards developing organizations (SDOs). It is open to all interested stakeholders, including SDOs, consortia and other fora, industry, government, and consumers.
Attendees will be welcomed with opening remarks by S. Joe Bhatia, ANSI president and CEO. Following these remarks, three panels will convene to address critical issues in the standards and conformity assessment community today. Each session will begin with presentations by representatives from the public and private sectors, standards developing organizations, and consortia on topics as follows:
The meeting's first panel will address Cybersecurity and Its Impact on Your Organization. According to the Congressional Research Service, the annual economic impact of cyber attacks on businesses - which can come from internal networks, the Internet, or other private or public systems - is estimated to be more than $226 billion. Members of this panel will examine how standards and conformity assessment activities can help to identify, quantify, and mitigate the financial risk associated with cybersecurity.
The second panel of the meeting will focus on Building a Sustainable Future. With the concepts of "green" and "socially responsible" subject to varied interpretations in the marketplace, government, consumers, industry, and others are looking to standards and criteria to help establish uniform technical requirements, methods, processes, and practices that address sustainability. This session will address methods for developing environmentally friendly, high-performance buildings through the effective use and development of voluntary consensus standards.
The final panel of the day, panelists and attendees will discuss Social Media Technologies. Companies and organizations are using a wide variety of tools that fall under the umbrella of social media to promote themselves, raise awareness, and get new participants or customers. Beyond these uses, social media can also facilitate standards development through collaborate online environments. With these new uses of online platforms and technologies, new standards may be needed to address issues that have arisen, especially with regard to security and privacy. This panel will address ways that the standards and conformity assessment community can make use of social media and other web 2.0 technologies to increase efficiency and facilitate outreach to new constituency groups.
Following the three panel presentations, Art Cote, chairman of the ANSI Board of Directors, will lead all attendees in an open dialogue on other opportunities for collaboration.
