Agenda Finalized for Latest US and International Materials Education Symposia, Spring 2011

Two prestigious symposia will again draw together the materials education community across engineering, science, processing, and design

Cambridge, UK - January 20, 2011 - Granta Design has announced the full program for two Materials Education Symposia in March and April. The agenda has now been finalized by an independent Advisory Committee, made up of academics from leading universities and materials organizations. Topics include how to introduce students to environmental challenges and how to encourage cross-fertilization between disciplines.

The 2nd US Materials Education Symposium will be held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, MA, on March 24 - 25. The 3rd International Materials Education Symposium takes place at the University of Cambridge, England, on April 7-8. Both events are being coordinated by Granta Design and are supported by ASM International, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Materials Division, the European Society for Engineering Education (SEFI), and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS).

Last year, academics from over twenty countries registered for these two events. This year, the symposia have been extended to cover two days. The twenty-four talks at each event will be relevant to educators working in fields including materials science, manufacturing and processes, mechanical engineering, industrial design, aerospace and nuclear engineering, bio engineering, plastics, and sustainable engineering. Speakers will describe their approaches to materials teaching and their use of teaching resources. Discussion sessions, networking opportunities, a poster session, and a social program will make the event interactive. This congenial intellectual environment will encourage networking and the sharing of ideas. The full agendas for each two-day event are now available online.

As in previous years, each symposium will be preceded by short courses led by Prof. Ashby of Cambridge University. Day one will focus on 'Introducing Materials and the Environment', and day two addresses 'Advanced Materials Selection and Eco Design'.

Registration is still open for these events, together with the opportunity to submit a poster. However, many places have now been filled. More details, including full agendas and abstracts, are available at www.grantadesign.com/symposium/.
