-- Boiler combustion optimization improves energy savings, reduces emissions --

SINGAPORE - Invensys Operations Management, a global provider of technology systems, software solutions and consulting services to the manufacturing and infrastructure operations industries, today announced it has successfully implemented a combustion optimization control system for two coal-fired 600MW power boiler units operated by the China Huadian Inner Mongolia Energy Co., Ltd Baotou Power Generation Branch. The advanced process control (APC) project passed technical and acceptance testing administered by the Xi'an Thermal Power Research Institute and helped save energy costs, reduce emissions, more than double the ramp up rate and improve boiler performance efficiency for electric power plant units #1 and #2 in Baotou, Inner Mongolia.

The China Huadian Inner Mongolia Energy Co., Ltd Baotou Power Generation Branch, generates 7 billion kilowatt hours of power per year and serves more than 8 million square meters. Zhao Xiaodong, the plant's general manager, said, "The boiler combustion optimization project has been very successful. I thank the Invensys project team for its hard work and effort in helping us achieve productivity excellence, and I recommend the Invensys boiler combustion optimization solution to other electric power plants."

The Invensys team optimized boiler performance and combustion efficiency by implementing its SimSci-Esscor CONNOISSEUR multi-variable predictive control (MPC) software and non-linearity and neural networking technology across the plants' distributed control systems (DCS). The DCSs receive input from the MPC software to manage closed-loop optimization control over the boiler and steam turbine operations, increasing boiler combustion and overall operating efficiency. The Invensys solution helped lower coal consumption, reduce carbon and NOx emissions in fly ash, improve unit safety and operating stability, promote rapid response to load adjustment commands and reduce equipment failure and unplanned downtime.

"Our customers continue to face increasing operating costs and are always under great pressure to extract maximum value from their assets," said Ravi Gopinath, president, Invensys Operations Management, Asia Pacific. "Implementing an APC project of this scope demonstrates our commitment to helping our Asia Pacific customers implement innovative, real-time solutions to optimize their processes and their profits, while at the same time reaching sustainability and compliance goals and achieving productivity excellence."
