Eugene, OR - VersaLogic Corp. today announced the release of a new Debian Linux Quick Start Package (QSP) for the newly released "Ocelot" Z5xx Atom XL-based single board computer (SBC). The new QSP streamlines hardware setup by eliminating both operating system (OS) configuration and driver installation. Quick configuration and decreased application development time offers embedded developers a competitive design edge, and brings applications to market more rapidly, with fewer resources.
The package is based on the popular Debian Linux 5.0.2 (Lenny/Stable) product running Linux kernel 2.6.30-3. The bootable LiveCD is configured for easy installation and support for Ocelot's basic hardware features including Ethernet, audio, video, USB, and serial communications. Three stable images meet a wide range of functionality requirements. An Advanced User Package (AUP) contains kernel sources, a customized config file, and driver patches for Linux users running a version other than Debian. The Debian Linux OS can be used during system development to explore the Ocelot's extensive capabilities, or it can be used as the base OS.
"Finding drivers and getting them to work takes time and can be a challenge in Linux, especially for new hardware. Using this package, a Linux system complete with driver support for standard hardware, can be installed and running with just a few clicks," said Kushal Koolwal, R&D OS Engineer at VersaLogic.
The Debian Linux QSP (QSP-LNX-MNLW) is available for download to qualified applicants. Please visit the software section of the VersaLogic website for more information: http://www.versalogic.com/software/. VersaLogic supports many popular embedded operating systems, including Windows Embedded, Debian Linux, VxWorks, and QNX.
The Ocelot uses Intel's Z5xx Atom XL processor, designed specifically for embedded applications, to provide up to 1.6 GHz processing performance while drawing less than 7W of power. The compact SBC is ideal for defense, aerospace, medical device, robotics, and factory automation applications where high-performance, fanless, extended temperature operation is required.
