Press release date: October 6, 2010

On the second day of this year's gathering of the newspaper and media industry in Hamburg, press manufacturer Koenig & Bauer (KBA) and publishers Aachener Verlagsgesellschaft mbH exchanged contracts for two highly automated 32pp KBA Commander CT 4/2 presses. With a total of four Pastomat reelstands, four compact printing towers and two KF 5 folders, the presses are due for installation at the end of 2011. This latest order from Aachen pushes the number of Commander CT compact towers sold to date to 86.

The new KBA Commander CT will be putting its top-flight configuration to use above all for the printing of the two daily newspapers Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten, which are published in 17 different local editions. A daily circulation reaches 377,000 readers not only in and around Aachen, but also across a whole region stretching from Heinsberg via Düren to Monschau. Further important titles are the two weeklies Super Mittwoch and Super Sonntag, alongside a diversity of specials, supplements and magazines.

No. 1 on the regional newspaper market

Aachener Verlagsgesellschaft, a family-run concern wholly owned by the families of the founders of the Aachener Volkszeitung, acts as the principal partner of publishing company Zeitungsverlag Aachen GmbH. The latter was established in 1975 to implement a foresighted concept developed by the publishers of the newspapers Aachener Volkszeitung (since 1996 Aachener Zeitung) and Aachener Nachrichten. While the two newspapers remained independent in their editorial activities, resources were pooled in the advertising departments and in general administration. The technical equipment and sales organisation have been shared ever since. In 2003, the editorial concept was modified in response to changing economic conditions, targeting both significant cost savings and journalistic enhancements. Today, competing political and regional news pages are produced for all editions, in addition to separate local sections for Aachen and Düren. The news from the fields of sport, business and culture is identical in both newspapers. The local editorial offices in the rest of the region have been amalgamated.

Besides its daily newspapers, the publishing house holds a majority stake in the weekly titles Super Sonntag and Super Mittwoch and is at the same time involved in the electronic media via radio and Internet. In cooperation with further daily newspapers in the wider Rhine region, Zeitungsverlag Aachen is also a member of the regional advertising network kalaydo.de
