ATW Companies Showcases Engineered Metal Solutions at Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) East Exposition

WARWICK, RI – ATW Companies Inc., a leading provider of custom manufactured metal components and services, will be highlighting its leadership in engineered metal solutions for medical devices at the MD&M East Exposition, Booth #3434, June 18-20, 2013 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They will highlight technologies used in a new disposable laparoscopic scalpel device, as well as the company's other manufacturing services. These include medical machining capabilities, which facilitate high volume manufacturing processes, as well as medical stamping and assembly capabilities, which make ATW a one stop problem solver for medical device manufacturers.

This comprehensive catalog of manufacturing services was crucial in the development of a disposable metal laparoscopic scalpel device. To keep costs contained without compromising quality, the product was manufactured using a combination of capabilities from two different ATW companies. Parmatech's MIM facilities were used to near-net shape for dramatic cost savings, while Judson's precision medical machining division provided low-cost finishing for high-precision features.

"The importance of low-cost manufacturing is becoming critical for both domestic and international competitive advantages," said Tracy MacNeal, Chief Strategy Officer at ATW.  "Disposable products in metals are difficult to justify due to cost, but sometimes plastic just isn't an option due to strength requirements.  Parmatech's MIM combined with Judson's machining enabled this customer to take market share and launch a cost-competitive product when other MIM players couldn't deliver either the precision or the cost-point. This is ATW's value proposition: a portfolio of technologies ready to be combined to allow our strategic partners to succeed in a dynamic marketplace."

ATW Medical will also be on hand to discuss its capabilities for using machining in developing high volume manufacturing processes like MIM. The company's machining division is especially ideal for new product development when there are expectations that the product line will eventually require the efficiencies and cost savings of a high volume process. In addition, ATW Medical's complete assembly capabilities means the company can serve as one-stop problem solvers, increasing its value proposition to customers.
