ASTM International Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 26 February 2009 - The Ninth International ASTM/ESIS Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics (37th ASTM National Symposium on Fatigue and Fracture Mechanics) will be held May 20-22 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee E08 on Fatigue and Fracture and the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS), the symposium will be held in conjunction with the May 18-19 standards development meetings of the committee.

The objective of this symposium is to provide a forum to disseminate state-of-the-art analysis methodologies and testing techniques in the areas of fatigue and fracture mechanics to estimate the design and remaining lives of structures used in the aerospace, biomedical, petroleum, power generation and surface transportation industries. Papers on application of emerging analytical tools and novel experimental techniques to assess the durability of engineering structures and to identify the associated damage mechanisms in materials will be presented on the following topics:

o Fatigue, crack growth, and fracture under multiaxial and thermomechanical loading conditions;

o Cohesive zone models to predict fracture behavior;

o Fatigue, crack growth and fracture in materials with heterogeneous microstructures such as welds and brazes;

o Fatigue and crack growth in the presence of multiple damage mechanisms such as corrosion, creep and fretting;

o Effects of coatings, environment, heat treatment and residual stresses on fatigue and fracture of materials and structures;

o Novel experiments for cyclic loading of structures and materials;

o Experience with standard practices for fatigue and fracture testing including interlaboratory studies;

o Deformation and damage mechanisms in materials subjected to cyclic loading; and

o Experimental and analytical methods to track damage and estimate remaining life for ensuring integrity of structures.

Online registration opens on March 9 and closes May 13. The fee to attend the workshop for ASTM members, presenters and session chairs is $565 for online registration and $590 for on-site registration. The fee for non-ASTM members is $665 online and $690 on site. The fee is waived for students with a valid I.D.

Established in 1898, ASTM International is one of the largest international standards development and delivery systems in the world. ASTM International meets the World Trade Organization (WTO) principles for the development of international standards: coherence, consensus, development dimension, effectiveness, impartiality, openness, relevance and transparency. ASTM standards are accepted and used in research and development, product testing, quality systems and commercial transactions around the globe.
