Press release date: April 5, 2011

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - ASTM International will sponsor a workshop on Emerging Trends in Nuclear Energy - The Standards Component, on June 15 at the Marriott Anaheim in Anaheim, Calif. Representatives from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) have been invited to present their concepts and views on how nuclear energy is and will continue to be a solid resource for alternative energy and how sound standards will impact its strength, reliability and perception to the public. The intent of this workshop is twofold: (1) to contribute to the creation of an ASTM roadmap of the civil nuclear energy section; and (2) to learn more of the NRC's perspective as to the future of the nuclear industry, the trends and opportunities that will arise, and the issues and priorities that need to be addressed. The role ASTM standards play in the nuclear industry will be a highlight of the workshop as well. Objectives of this workshop include:
o Formation of a self-sustaining nuclear energy focal point within ASTM;
o Strengthening of alliances with other societies and international organizations;
o Increased understanding, profile and contributions in the nuclear energy sector;
o Identification of gaps in current and emerging technologies and related standards; and
o Development of a comprehensive Web-based clearinghouse of nuclear energy information. Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the workshop and closes June 8. There is no fee to attend the workshop. For more information, visit www.astm.org/C01work0611.htm.
