Press release date: July 12, 2010

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -ASTM International Committee D22 on Air Quality is sponsoring a Symposium on Surface and Dermal Sampling on Oct. 14-15, 2010, at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas. The symposium is being held in conjunction with the Oct. 10-13 standards development meetings of Committee D22.

The role of surface and dermal sampling to assess contamination levels, or to detect harmful agents, is growing. Agreement is needed on protocols for surface and dermal sampling, and methods for sampling of surfaces, including skin, are in need of standardization to improve data defensibility. The symposium will explore recent work that could aid in beginning the standards development process, and challenges that need to be overcome for further standards development.

Symposium presentations will cover the following topics:
  • Surface and dermal sampling protocols;
  • Samplers and sample collection media;
  • Target analytes - chemical and biological hazards, dermal sensitizers, asbestos;
  • Application of surface and dermal monitoring techniques to real-world problems;
  • Safety, health and risk assessment;
  • Quality assurance and method performance; and
  • Policy issues relating to surface and dermal monitoring.

    Online registration opens approximately eight weeks before the symposium and will close Oct. 6. The fee for ASTM members, session chairs and presenters is $295 USD for online registration and $345 USD for on-site registration. The fee for non-ASTM members is $345 USD online and $395 USD on site. The fee is waived for students with a valid I.D. For more information, visit www.astm.org/D22symp1010.htm.
