Recycled Resins are Subject of Proposed ASTM Plastic Piping Systems Standard

Press release date: February 7, 2013

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., —A proposed new ASTM International standard will provide assurance regarding the quality of high-density polyethylene corrugated pipe using recycled resins.

ASTM WK39632, Specification for 3 through 24 Inch Corrugated Polyethylene Pipe and Fittings with Recycled Resins, is being developed by Subcommittee F17.65 on Land Drainage, part of ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems. The proposed standard includes requirements and test methods for materials, workmanship, dimensions, perforations and pipe stiffness.

Once approved, ASTM WK39632 will be used by manufacturers to produce pipes made from recycled materials for end users such as excavation/drainage contractors and farmers.  In addition, some of the plastic pipe types covered in ASTM WK39632 are available in home center stores for basic drainage needs, such as downspouts and surface drains.

“The proposed standard will specify the types of materials used, the quality of recycled material, the amount of contaminants allowed and long-term testing to ensure the end user has a quality product,” says Douglas Baker, engineering manager, Springfield Plastics Inc., and an F17 member.

ASTM WK39632 is in the early stages of its development and all interested parties are invited to join F17.65.
