ASTM International Workshop on Advances in Copper Wire Making Will Be Held in April



W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., -A workshop on Advances in Copper Wire Making will be held April 18 at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel in Phoenix, Ariz. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee B05 on Copper and Copper Alloys, the workshop will be held in conjunction with the April standards development meetings of the committee.

The workshop will provide advances in copper wire making with some emphasis on recent improvements in continuous casting. The discussion will summarize some developments that have occurred in the mining and subsequent manufacture of copper rod from 9000 B.C. until the present time. Principles and practices associated with continuous rod production will be presented from a metallurgical perspective, and include the effects of oxygen content, impurities, and rod cleaning methods.

A brief historical review will be given of important changes to ASTM International copper rod standards, and to wire drawing events dating back several thousand years. Finally, predictions will be made concerning the future of the wire and cable industry with particular emphasis on copper wire, technology in this market, and competitive materials.
