ASTM International Sensory Evaluation Committee Recognizes Dr. Daniel Ennis With Peryam Award

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., — ASTM International Committee E18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products has presented the David R. Peryam Award to Daniel Ennis, Ph.D., president of the Institute for Perception in Richmond, Va. The Peryam Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of professionals in the applied sensory science field.

A member of ASTM International and Committee E18 since 1997, Ennis has more than 35 years of experience working on product testing theory and applications for consumer products.

After holding product development and testing positions at Frito-Lay and Philip Morris USA, Ennis founded the Institute for Perception in 1994 to pursue his research interests while providing clients with his unique perspective on a variety of problems in the sensory and consumer science fields. Among other contributions, he has introduced a more systematic and statistical approach to the substantiation of advertising claims; developed Landscape Segmentation Analysis®, the first non-degenerate liking/emotion unfolding model; and identified the power and relevance of graph theoretic tools within sensory science.

Ennis holds two doctorates – a Ph.D. in food science and biometrics from the University of Maryland, and a D.Sc. in mathematical and statistical psychology from Wageningen University, the Netherlands, as well as a master’s degree in food science, also from the University of Maryland. He has published three books and more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and technical reports on statistics and mathematical models for human decision-making and was the first to show that humans possess a transducer in the chemical senses. He also teaches short courses to industrial audiences on product testing theory and applications.

A global consultant who has served as an expert witness in a wide variety of false advertising cases, Ennis is also a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT). He was awarded the Sensory and Consumer Sciences Achievement Award from IFT in 2013 and was selected as the scientific lecturer for IFT’s Sensory Evaluation Division in 1998.
