ASTM International Publishes STP 1481, Fatigue and Fracture of Medical Metallic Materials and Devices

STP 1481, Fatigue and Fracture of Medical Metallic Materials and Devices, is now available from ASTM International. STP 1481 contains eleven peer-reviewed papers that include timely information on the unique thermal and mechanical properties of shape memory alloys (SMA's) and metallic medical materials and devices.

Although nitinol-based technologies are the predominant topics, several other metallic medical materials and devices are included in the publication. Nitinol SMA's are unique alloys that offer the designer new dimensions in controlling the shape of devices used in medical and many structural applications. This publication presents new data on constitutive models, lifetime assessment of self-expanding medical devices, fatigue, fracture and deformation behavior of shape memory alloys based on recent research.

Topics covered in STP 1481 include the metallurgical basics of martensitic transformations, fatigue behavior of nitinol, the influence of phase transformations on mechanical properties and the thermoelastic transformational behavior of these alloys.

M. R. Mitchell, Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff, Ariz., and Kenneth L. Jerina, Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., served as the editors for this volume.

Copies of STP 1481, Fatigue and Fracture of Medical Metallic Materials and Devices (132 pages, soft cover, 6" x 9"; ISBN: 978-0-8031-4511-5; stock # STP1481) are available for $55 from ASTM Customer Service (phone: 610/832-9585; fax: 610/832-9555; service@astm.org) or online at www.astm.org.
