Sonia Bain receives ASTM Award of Merit.

ASTM International Award of Merit Honors Sonia Bain for Contributions to Standards Related to Liquid Fuels



W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., —Sonia Bain, supervisor, refining, analytical and development at Marathon Petroleum Co., Catlettsburg, Ky., has been honored with the Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow by ASTM International Committee D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants. The award is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.



Committee D02 cited Bain for her outstanding contributions in the development of standards related to liquid fuels within Subcommittees D02.A0 on Gasoline and Oxygenated Fuels and D02.D0 on Hydrocarbons for Chemical and Special Uses. A member of ASTM International since 1986, Bain works on multiple D02 subcommittees and serves as vice chairman of the section on Oxygenated Fuels and Components. As the main liaison on test method updates for biofuels between Subcommittee D02.A0 and other ASTM subcommittees, she has helped to ensure that D02.A0 specifications are revised to incorporate biofuels. She has received several D02 awards for her contributions, including an Award of Appreciation and the Award of Excellence on four different occasions. 



Bain’s expertise is in the areas of analytical chemistry and product quality has enabled her to make significant technical contributions in numerous analytical techniques and several product areas over the course of her career, which she began at Dow Chemical Co. in 1975. She joined Marathon Petroleum in 1980, and assumed her current title in 2007.



A graduate of the Federal University of Bahia, Salvador, Bahia, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Bain is also a member of Partners of the Americas.
