ASTM Award of Merit Honors Dr. John Germaine for Work on Soil and Rock Committee



W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., 15 April 2009 - ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock has presented Dr. John Germaine, senior research associate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Mass., with the ASTM International Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow. The Award of Merit is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

A member of ASTM International since 1985, Germaine is a very active member of D18, where he is second vice chair on the main committee and works on several D18 subcommittees. Committee D18 has recognized Germaine's work over the years with multiple awards, including the C. A. Hogentogler Award in 1990, the Woodland G. Shockley Memorial Award in 2008, and the A. Ivan Johnson Outstanding Achievement Award in both 2000 and 2004.

Germaine has spent his professional career at MIT, where he earned both a master's degree and his doctorate in geotechnical engineering. As senior lecturer and senior research associate in MIT's Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, he has supervised 50 graduate students in the completion of their master's degree programs and more than 25 students in their doctoral work. The focus of his research is geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, lab and field instrumentation, data acquisition and lab testing automation.

Outside ASTM International, Germaine is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and Chi Epsilon, the national civil engineering honor society in the United States. He holds a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Worcester, Mass.
