ASQ Joins Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition
ASQ to help develop next generation of smart manufacturing workers, platform
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — ASQ, the leading authority on quality in all fields and industries, has joined the Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition (SMLC), a public-private partnership developing testbeds and training for next generation manufacturing technology platforms.
Spearheaded by Alcoa and Rockwell Automation in the manufacturing ranks, UCLA and the University of Texas, and the National Institute of Science and Technology — among many others — the SMLC was launched in July 2012 to drive improved manufacturing efficiencies, reduce waste and integrate manufacturing intelligence in real time across an entire production operation.
ASQ, which has been indirectly involved in SMLC initiatives for months, recognizes that SMLC efforts align well with ASQ’s long standing role in manufacturing. ASQ subject experts hope to assist the SMLC develop workforce training, tools and innovations to implement breakthrough smart manufacturing technologies.
“The Smart Manufacturing Leadership Coalition has its goals rooted in quality, which is helping companies perform more efficiently with higher quality outcomes,” said ASQ CEO Paul Borawski. “We are excited for the opportunity to share our resources with the SMLC, accentuating quality through the development and growth of the organization.”

As members of the SMLC, ASQ joins companies like Alcoa, General Motors, Honeywell, Pfizer and Rockwell Automation.
This is the second opportunity afforded to ASQ to provide resources to help train the future workforce in manufacturing. In 2012, ASQ announced its partnership with the Manufacturing Institute’s Skills Certification System, which is designed to educate a workforce needed to fill the gap of retiring workers and to help companies compete in a global economy. ASQ offers its 17 certifications, training and knowledge resources to directly address the deficits in manufacturing education and training.
