ASHRAE has always set high standards for sustainable building design, energy efficiency and indoor air quality. With the publication of the nation's first code-intended commercial green building standard, 189.1, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings, ASHRAE is continuing to raise the standards for achieving high performance building goals. It is supported in its efforts by its partners in developing Standard 189.1, the U.S. Green Building Council and the Illuminating Engineering Society.
Once published in January 2010, 189 will provide a "total building sustainability package" for those who strive to design, build and operate green buildings. From site location to energy use to recycling, this standard will set the foundation for green buildings through its adoption into local codes. It covers key topic areas similar to green building rating systems: site sustainability, water use efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality and the building's impact on the atmosphere, materials and resources.
This year's ASHRAE Press Breakfast provides an in-depth look at Standard 189.1P, Standard for the Design of High-Performance, Green Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings and outlines how the standard will impact the building industry. The topics and speakers participating in this year's briefing are:
oKent Peterson, P.E., chair of the Standard 189.1 committee and vice president and chief engineer of P2S Engineering Inc., Long Beach, Calif., providing an overall look at the standard and discussing its impact on the industry.
oMark MacCracken, vice chair and USGBC representative on the Standard 189.1 committee and president of CALMAC Manufacturing Corp., Fair Lawn, N.J., discussing the standard's indoor environmental quality requirements.
oNick Ferzacca, vice chair and IES representative on the Standard 189.1 committee and associate principal, Architectural Engineers, Boston, Mass., talking about the standard's requirements for operation and lighting impact as they apply to site sustainability, indoor environmental quality and energy efficiency.
