ASABE to develop standard for Smart Irrigation Controllers.

June 28, 2012 - ASABE has initiated project to develop S627, Standardized Testing Protocol for Weather-based or Soil Moisture-based Landscape Irrigation Control Devices. As demand on water resources and importance of water use efficiency grow, water agencies, regulators, land owners, and landscape managers are relying more heavily on irrigation controllers that use real-time weather or soil-moisture data to determine irrigation needs and scheduling. Document will standardize methods for testing such controllers.

ST JOSEPH, MICHIGAN- The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated a project to develop a new standard, S627, Standardized Testing Protocol for Weather-based or Soil Moisture-based Landscape Irrigation Control Devices. Those with interest and expertise in the subject matter are invited to participate in the project.

As the demand on water resources and the importance of water use efficiency grow, water agencies, regulators, land owners, landscape managers, and others are relying more heavily on irrigation controllers that use real-time weather or soil-moisture data to determine irrigation needs and scheduling. The new document will standardize the methods for testing such controllers.

ASABE is recognized worldwide as a standards developing organization for food, agricultural, and biological systems, with more than 240 standards currently in publication. Conformance to ASABE standards is voluntary, except where required by state, provincial, or other governmental requirements, and the documents are developed by consensus in accordance with procedures approved by the American National Standards Institute.
