ASABE Standard to cover anhydrous ammonia application machinery.

Press Release Summary:

ASABE has initiated project to develop new standard, Agricultural Machinery: Safety for Anhydrous Ammonia Application Equipment. Standard will address issues specific to anhydrous ammonia applicator, applicator distribution systems, electronic and mechanical metering and control systems, and implement-to-nurse tank hitching. Also included will be aspects of nurse tank-to-applicator coupling and delivery system that are not covered by other industry standards.

ASABE to Develop Safety Standard for Anhydrous Ammonia Application Machinery

ST JOSEPH, MICHIGAN- The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) has initiated a project to develop a new standard, Agricultural Machinery: Safety for Anhydrous Ammonia Application Equipment.

Anhydrous ammonia application equipment is becoming more complex, with integrated metering and distribution systems, automated control systems, automated hitching functions, and advanced product flow functions. General safety standards exist for implement safety and anhydrous ammonia handling. However, a specific standard remains to be developed addressing risks related to equipment operation, service and repair. Incidents and scenarios related to nurse tank coupling and sectional delivery system design and layout indicate an additional safety-related standard is needed to replace an international standard (ISO 4254-2, Tractors and machinery agriculture and forestry - Technical means for producing safety - Part 2: Anhydrous ammonia application) that had been withdrawn because it had become outdated.

Issues to be addressed in this safety standard are specific to the anhydrous ammonia applicator, the applicator distribution systems, electronic and mechanical metering and control systems, and implement-to-nurse tank hitching. Also included will be aspects of the nurse tank-to-applicator coupling and the delivery system that are not covered by other industry standards.

ASABE is recognized worldwide as a standards developing organization for food, agricultural, and biological systems, with more than 225 standards currently in publication. Conformance to ASABE standards is voluntary, except where required by state, provincial, or other governmental requirements, and the documents are developed by consensus in accordance with procedures approved by the American National Standards Institute. For information on this or any other ASABE standard, contact Scott Cedarquist at ASABE, 269-932-7031, cedarq@asabe.org. A current listing of all ASABE standards projects can be found on the ASABE web site at asabe.org/standards/proposed.html .

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers is an educational and scientific organization dedicated to the advancement of engineering applicable to agricultural, food, and biological systems.
