ANSI to Host Spring/Summer Series of Courses on Standards and Conformity Assessment
In a message to its member organizations today, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced that it will host several courses on standards and conformity assessment in the spring and summer of 2008. In its message, ANSI director of communications and education Stacy Leistner encouraged members of the standards community of all levels to attend.
"Whether you are new to standardization and conformity assessment or have years of experience under your belt, we think you will find courses that expand your knowledge and enhance your skills," said Leistner.

The Operating Procedures of U.S. TAGs to ISO: Strengthening the U.S. Voice in International Standardization
On May 21, 2008, ANSI will lead a training course (#208) for U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrators. Attendees will learn about accreditation, membership, voting requirements and rules for developing positions by exploring the processes and operating procedures of ANSI-accredited U.S. TAGs to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This course will provide an understanding of the ISO standards development process with a focus on how to promote U.S. involvement-and the acceptance of U.S. positions-in an international standards committee.
The first session of Course #208 will take place at the American Society for Quality (ASQ) headquarters in Milwaukee, WI, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Central). This session is held in conjunction with the May 20th meeting of the ANSI International Forum (AIF).
Course #208 will also run on July 22, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern) in New York City.
Delegate to Diplomat: Representing the United States in International Standards Activities
This web-based course (#284) will teach participants how to develop successful strategies and tactics for negotiating U.S. positions in international standards activities, including the development process and procedures. Attendees will learn the key rules and procedures governing the conduct of U.S. delegates to international meetings and tactics for negotiating at regional and international standard-setting forums.
This virtual course is offered in two sessions; one session will be focused on ISO procedures (to be held on June 11, 2008 from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Eastern), and the other on procedures used by ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee (JTC) 1 (to be held on June 12, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Eastern). Participation is possible anywhere there is a telephone and a computer with Internet access. Audio is delivered over the telephone (toll free) and the slide show and relevant documents can be viewed simultaneously via a web browser.
The American Way: The American National Standard (ANS) Development Process
ANSI's first course of the summer offers an excellent "nuts and bolts" preparation for those who are considering becoming ANSI-accredited standards developers. Course #287 will discuss the importance of U.S. voluntary consensus standards, the types of accreditation, all the stages in the standards development process, and how to make the most of participation in standards development.
Course #287 will be held on July 21, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern) in New York City.
ISO Secretariat Operations: Taking the Secret out of the Secretariat
Insight and advice on successful ISO committee management will be the focus of Course #205. Attendees will build an understanding of the ISO and ISO/IEC JTC 1 standards development processes, alternative deliverables, and effective management techniques. The roles and responsibilities of all committee officers will be discussed, as well as the requirements for ISO committee meetings and helpful hints on preparation for and conduct at meetings. Additional discussion will cover special issues for Secretariats, including a review of new ISO electronic management tools.
Course #205 will be held on July 23, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Eastern) in New York City.
