ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal for ISO Standard on Treated Wastewater Reuse Implementation

The Standards Institution of Israel (SII) has submitted a proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for a standard on treated wastewater reuse implementation. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments by July 24, 2009.

The proposed standard will deal with the requirements and processes involved in the healthy, environmentally viable, and sustainable reuse of treated wastewater in agriculture, landscape, and industry. It will provide guidelines for the successful design, construction, operation, and maintenance of such systems while avoiding health hazards due to impact on the environment.

Specific topics listed by the SII to be detailed in the standard include:

Wastewater treatment plants

Treated wastewater distribution and storage systems

Irrigation systems

Wastewater quality suitability to soils and crops

Wastewater quality demands

Management issues related to these projects will also be addressed, including requirements and procedures for integrating health and environmental aspects into design, operation, and development processes of projects related to treated wastewater reuse, and the products obtained from such projects.

All comments should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (scornish@ansi.org). Feedback received by the July 24 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.

ANSI recently published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC. Click here to download the document.
