Proceedings and Video Webcast from ANSI Transatlantic Trade Conference Now Available
Information from the recent American National Standards Institute (ANSI) conference on transatlantic trade, including the program with linked presentations and a video webcast of the entire event, is now available for public viewing.
Supporting Transatlantic Trade: Standards and Conformance for Business and Regulators, which was held on September 24, 2008, in Washington, DC, highlighted standards and compliance programs that strengthen economic cooperation between the U.S. and the European Union (EU). The event brought together the European Standards Organizations (ESOs), including the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), as well as representatives of six U.S. government agencies, the European Commission (EC) Directorates General, and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).
Nearly seventy individuals representing the private and public sectors were in attendance, continuing a nearly twenty-year dialogue on standards and conformity assessment in support of U.S.-EU trade. Discussions during the conference centered on the use of private-sector standards and conformity assessment programs to facilitate smart regulation and harmonize cross-border requirements.
ANSI president and CEO S. Joe Bhatia delivered the keynote address during the luncheon. He encouraged greater industry and regulator engagement in the standardization community, and noted that the ongoing dialogue between ANSI, the ESOs, the U.S. government, the EC, and EFTA is of critical importance in maintaining private-sector leadership in the standards and conformity assessment arena.
The dialogue between ANSI and the ESOs continues in 2009 with scheduled leaders meetings. In addition, a joint ANSI-CEN conference on Building Information Modeling (BIM) is currently under development for the fourth quarter; more information will be posted on ANSI Online as details become available.
