Between the rising cost of living and concerns about protecting the environment, homeowners have become increasingly interested in finding ways to cut down on energy use. A newly launched initiative called the 2 Degree Pledge suggests simple steps that make saving energy simple and practical for every home.
The Pledge provides homeowners with several tips that will lead to greater energy efficiency - and lower energy bills:
o install a programmable thermostat
o ensure high quality installation for heating and air conditioning equipment
o uphold proper maintenance of this equipment
o adjust thermostats according to the time of day (for example, turning the heat down during the day when no one is home)
The website also offers a number of useful tools and resources, including lists of qualified contractors, a quality installation checklist, a do-it-yourself energy audit kit, and calculators that show energy savings for heating and cooling system upgrades. For homeowners looking to make more substantial home improvements, information is available on the latest heating and cooling systems, from geothermal heat pumps to new refrigerants like R-410A, which is chlorine free and ozone friendly.
Consumers are encouraged to sign up for the 2 Degree Pledge to show their commitment to lowering energy use, saving money, and protecting the environment. Those who take the pledge can sign up to receive a copy of A Greener Planet Begins at Home, a booklet that includes further information on how homeowners can contribute to a healthier earth.
The 2 Degree Pledge is a collaborative project led by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI), the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), the U.S. Energy Association (USEA), and North American Technician Excellence (NATE). AHRI, AHAM, and EEI are all members of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
