ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal for ISO Work Item on Economic Benefits of Electricity-Saving Measures

New York March 27, 2009

The Standardization Administration of the People's Republic of China (SAC) has submitted a proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for a new field of ISO technical activity on criteria for calculating and assessing the economic benefits of electricity-saving measures. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments by May 1, 2009.

The proposal indicates the intention to develop a single standard within a new ISO Project Committee that will address methods for determining electricity savings and the economic benefits of electricity-saving measures. The proposed document will also guide evaluation methods for investments in initiatives that aim to save electricity.

Possible benefits of the proposed standard suggested in the SAC document include:

-development of new electricity-saving technologies
-reduced technical barriers to technology development
-facilitated access to new energy-saving markets
-increased electricity-saving technology and information flow between markets
-electricity-saving technology as an international commodity with high adding value
-increased use of energy-efficient technologies in developed and developing countries

All comments should be sent to Steven Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (scornish@ansi.org). Feedback received by the May 1 deadline will reviewed by the ANSI Virtual Technical Advisory Group (VTAG) for the ISO Technical Management Board (TMB) Strategic Advisory Group on Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Sources. The VTAG will develop a recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.

ANSI recently published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC.
