ANSI Seeks Comments on Proposal for ISO Technical Activity on Mechatronics

The Association Francaise de Normalisation (AFNOR) has submitted a proposal to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) for a new field of technical activity on mechatronics. As the U.S. member body to ISO, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) invites all interested stakeholders to submit comments by September 25, 2009.

Mechatronics is an approach aiming at the synergistic integration of mechanics, electronics, control theory, and computer science within product design and manufacturing in order to improve and/or optimize the functionality of mechanical products.

The proposed technical activity will address the standardization of mechatronics. AFNOR suggests that this standardization will allow stakeholders to share knowledge and research results, increasing functionality, reducing costs, and minimizing environmental impact of mechatronic solutions.

All comments should be sent to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (scornish@ansi.org). Feedback received by the September 25 deadline will be reviewed and compiled for the recommended ANSI position and comments, which will then be presented to the ANSI ISO Council (AIC) for formal approval.

ANSI has published an explanatory information document outlining the process used to develop U.S. positions on issues and activities under consideration by ISO and IEC. Click here to download the document.
