Press release date: December 9, 2009

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) was pleased to host a delegation from the China National Institute of Standardization (CNIS) in its Washington, DC, offices on December 1, 2009. ANSI member attendance totaled close to 25 participants both in person and via web conference.

CNIS delegates provided a number of informative presentations highlighting a general overview of the organization's activity and structure, a standardization education research project, and CNIS's contributions to China's policies for intellectual property and standards.

CNIS is a quasi-governmental organization affiliated with the General Administration of Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ), and is a national research body in China. In addition to conducting research on topics relating to standardization, CNIS is also frequently tasked with developing national standards, representing China in technical committees of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), developing China's national standardization strategy, and developing draft standardization policies that have the potential to be adopted by the Chinese government. Key areas in which CNIS has been active include the use of patents in standards, standards for energy efficiency, food, and agriculture, and standards for quality management and consumer product safety.

The CNIS delegates included:

Wang Ping, Deputy Chief Engineering and Director, International Cooperation Department BaiDianyi, Director, Sub-Institute of General Standardization

Wang Yiyi, Deputy Director, Sub-Institute of Standardization Theory and Strategy

Xu Ping, Director, General Office

Tiffany Jiang, Ph.D., Department of International Cooperation

The visit resulted in increased information exchange on key topics and initiatives and the possibility of arranging future ANSI guest researchers. In 2009 Li Aixian of CNIS worked with ANSI for much of the year, assisting with the development of new content for www.StandardsPortal.org and meeting with U.S. organizations as part of her research on energy standardization topics.
