Press release date: December 1, 2008

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has announced that the next monthly ANSI Caucus Luncheon will be held on Friday, December 5, 2008. The meeting will feature guest speaker James H. Turner, Jr., chief counsel for the House Committee on Science and Technology.

Throughout his tenure on the staff of the House Committee on Science of the U.S. Congress, Mr. Turner has strived to raise general awareness of the importance of standards and the value of the voluntary consensus standards system throughout the legislative and regulatory process. He was a leader in the enactment of Public Law 104-113, the National Technology Transfer and Advancement Act (NTTAA) of 1995, a law that has greatly benefited the public by facilitating the development of private sector standards that respond to government and private sector needs.

At the recent U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day 2008, Mr. Turner received the Ronald H. Brown Standards Leadership Award. This award recognizes demonstrated leadership in promoting the important role of standardization in eliminating global barriers to trade. Previously, Turner has been presented with the 2000 William T. Cavanaugh Memorial Award by ASTM International, and the Melvin R. Green Codes and Standards Medal by ASME.

Mr. Turner currently serves on ANSI's Board of Directors, and was previously a member of the ASTM Board of Directors.

The December Caucus is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), an ANSI member and audited designator.

The caucus will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the National Press Club (529 14th Street, NW, 13th Floor, Zenger Room). RSVPs are requested by Friday, December 5, 2008.

To RSVP, communicate special dietary requests, or for more information on caucus luncheons, please contact Meghan Silver (msilver@ansi.org; 202.331.3603).
