AIA Welcomes Pause concerning EU enforcement of ETS.November 15, 2012 -
In her statement on European Union (EU) decision to suspend enforcement of Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), AIA President and CEO Marion C. Blakey said AIA is "especially pleased that the EU has taken last week’s draft ICAO Council decision as the positive impetus it needed to pause its controversial trading scheme." Blakey added that it is important to note said proposal pauses and does not repeal ETS law, passage of which AIA continues to support.

Statement by Marion C. Blakey, President and CEO of the Aerospace Industries Association, on the European Union decision to suspend enforcement of the Emissions Trading Scheme:
Arlington, Va. – “The Aerospace Industries Association welcomes today’s announcement by EU Commissioner for Climate Action Connie Hedegaard that the EU will suspend enforcement of the inclusion of aviation emissions from non-European countries in its CO2 emissions trading scheme. AIA has long supported a global, consensus approach to dealing with CO2 emissions from aviation.”
“We are especially pleased that the EU has taken last week’s draft ICAO Council decision as the positive impetus it needed to pause its controversial trading scheme and let the international community work out a solution in a collaborative atmosphere leading up to ICAO’s triennial assembly next fall. AIA, the international civil aviation industry and the UN have consistently maintained that the International Civil Aviation Organization is the appropriate body to address this issue. ICAO’s broad approach to CO2 emissions reduction takes into account technological and operational improvements as well as economic measures.”
“While AIA recognizes and applauds this important development, Ms. Hedegaard’s plan must still be approved by the European Parliament and Ministers. It is also important to note that her proposal pauses, but does not repeal, the ETS law. Consequently, AIA continues to support the need for the passage of S.1956: European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011.”
