Press release date: June 28, 2007

Patent covers software technology that analyzes and shows how objects communicate in multiple directions over time

EXTON, Pa., June 28 / / - The U.S. Patent & Trademark Office recently granted Analytical Graphics, Inc. (AGI) a patent for software technology that analyzes attitude- and position-dependent data and displays the results on a three-dimensional sphere. U.S. patent 7,224,311, entitled "A System and Method for Visualization and Attitude/Position-Dependent Data," is based on innovations by AGI astrodynamicists Haroon Rashid, Ph.D., and Sergei Tanygin, Ph.D. This analysis and visualization capability allows users to comprehend how an object communicates in multiple directions over time, and is included in the company's STK Expert Edition desktop software. It is the 14th patent issued to AGI since 1999.

One way this technology can be used is to examine how well a satellite communicates based on the orientation of its antennas. STK's analytical engine computes numerous metrics that consider antenna gain patterns, dynamic orientation of the satellite, and sources of interference and jamming. When the results are shown on a 3D color-coded graphic, satellite system operators can select an optimal pointing direction for the antenna. The technology can also be applied to other moving objects such as aircraft, battleships, and tanks.

"This patent represents AGI's continual drive for innovation in its software offerings," says Paul Graziani, AGI president and CEO. "We are proud of the expertise our astrodynamicists contribute to groundbreaking efforts that benefit so many national security and space professionals."

Other AGI patented technologies include methods for orbit determination; transmitter and receiver bandwidth modeling; determination of spacecraft drag; spacecraft sensor obscuration; and three-dimensional orbit maneuver analysis. AGI currently has three additional patents pending. To learn more about AGI technology innovations incorporated into the company's software, visit www.agi.com/patents.
