Software program subscribers receive versatile thin client for 800xA at no additional cost

Baden, Switzerland, September 24, 2009 -ABB announced today that its IndustrialIT cpmPlus Smart Client is now available as an included upgrade for System 800xA Automation Sentinel software management program subscribers that have the history option in their Automation Sentinel contract. This upgrade will be provided to these subscribers at no additional cost.

Automation Sentinel is an innovative program for ABB control system software management that helps customers actively manage their lifecycle costs, by extending support for, and the value of, existing ABB software investments. With this program, ABB customers keep their installed software products up to date and maintain a flexible and affordable path forward to evolve to the latest system software versions at the their desired pace.

Part of ABB's Collaborative Production Management Suite, cpmPlus Smart Client enhances System 800xA Information Management by allowing customers to securely access System 800xA via any internet connection for real-time visibility into the process from any location, as long as a connection to the plant exists (i.e. VPN). cpmPlus Smart Client also provides new display and data analysis capabilities for Information Management users.

The Automation Sentinel upgrade provides the licenses for the basic functionality of cpmPlus Smart Client to customers using System 800xA with no license cost.

"We are committed to providing our customers with the programs and services they need to get the very best performance out of their ABB control system investment, while effectively managing their overall lifecycle costs" said Rudy Schneider, Business Development Manager, Automation Lifecycle Programs at ABB. "By offering Smart Client as part of our industry leading Automation Sentinel subscription program, customers can enjoy the benefits of expanded real time visibility into their plant system, from any location, at any time of day or night."

Utilizing the extended automation capabilities of System 800xA technology, Smart Client provides intelligent data access and viewing functions in a user-friendly, browser-based display to assist all levels of personnel when they need a real-time window into their operations when they are not on-site. These displays are available using standard network connections, inside or outside of the manufacturing facility. System 800xA's single point of change management ensures that all updates are automatically reproduced throughout the system, so that any information viewed via Smart Client reflects the up-to-the minute system context, status and process conditions.

Smart Client incorporates the same system-wide authorization settings as System 800xA, ensuring data security and integrity. In addition to browser-based graphical displays, Smart Client also provides trending and Statistical Process Control. Options for alarm and event reporting and a Microsoft Excel interface are also available.

Smart Client is a core component of cpmPlus (www.abb.com/cpm), ABB's Collaborative Production Management suite of applications. cpmPlus provides process and production management, advanced optimization and connectivity solutions for the process industries.

The Automation Sentinel Program is part of ABB's ongoing commitment to help its customers get the most value out of their current ABB control system investment; as it protects their past, present, and future automation investments. It complements ABB's robust portfolio of control system evolution planning products and services.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
