Press release date: May 24, 2007

New wind power project will avoid 450,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually

Zurich, Switzerland, May 24, 2007 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $33-million contract to supply underwater power cables and electrical equipment for phase one of the Thornton Bank wind farm, about 30 kilometers off the Belgian coast in the North Sea.F

The 60-turbine project is being built in phases by Belgian wind-farm developer, C-Power NV, and will add 300 megawatts (MW) of wind-generated electrical capacity to the national grid. This is equal to one-third of the additional generation that Belgium needs to meet its European Union renewable-energy target and enough power to satisfy the annual energy needs of 600,000 people.

"ABB is a leading supplier of equipment to the wind energy sector, as well as solutions that reliably and efficiently connect wind-generated power to the grid," said Peter Leupp, head of ABB's Power Systems division. "Our technology will ensure maximum use of this important renewable power source by keeping the grid stable and power losses low."

ABB's scope of supply includes electrical system analysis, submarine power cables with integrated fiber optics, jointing and the installation of terminations onshore and on the wind turbines. ABB is also supplying all the main electrical equipment for onshore substation.

Phase one of Thornton Bank will be commissioned in 2008. The wind farm will generate an estimated 1000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity annually when all phases are completed.

ABB has supplied more than 15,000 generators and additional equipment including power and pad-mounted transformers, medium-voltage breakers, switchgear, capacitors, cables as well as system studies for important wind energy projects around the world. They include recent projects in Japan, Canada, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 109,000 people.
