ABB Brochure Describes Enhanced Safety 2600T Pressure Transmitter

Four-page full-color brochure covers the enhanced Safety 2600T pressure transmitter from ABB. According to the brochure, the Safety 2600T transmitter incorporates new international standards. Model 268 is IEC 61508 TÃœV certified to SIL2 (1oo1) and to SIL3 in a 1oo2 architecture. The brochure says that it's designed specifically for Safety Instrumented Systems and critical applications where safety and performance are the main requirements.

The brochure continues with information explaining how these transmitters reduce instrumentation costs. For example, in an SIL2 environment, a single Safety 2600T transmitter can replace two conventional transmitters. In an SIL3 environment, two Safety 2600T transmitters replace three regular ones. The brochure notes that the reduced number of transmitters decreases purchasing, wiring, installation, and maintenance costs by up to 50%.

Next the brochure discusses the principle of operation for the new transmitters, covering sensors, microcontroller, diagnostics, and A/D conversion. If the microcontroller detects a difference between the output of the two internal pressure sensors, the analog 4 - 20 mA output is driven up or downscale to a safe condition. A large multi-color block diagram explains the flow of information among the various internal components.

Lastly, the brochure covers Safety 2600T functionality. It notes that any one hardware failure activates the safety function. Additionally, different algorithms perform the same calculation to assure safe operation. The base accuracy of the Safety 2600T transmitter is ±0.075%.
