ABB continues successful tests to integrate its distribution automation, SCADA, and distribution grid management systems with AMI and smart meter technologies to offer a single Smart Grid platform for utilities

Washington, DC, September 23, 2009 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology company, today announced it has successfully integrated - and continues to test and develop - multiple standards-based advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) technologies with ABB's own advanced distribution automation and network management solutions.

These demonstrations, in collaboration with many of the industry-leading AMI and metering technology companies in the industry, have resulted in seamless interoperability between these solutions to create a single, integrated smart grid-based platform.

ABB has developed strategic partnerships and close collaboration with the following partners:

o Silver Spring Networks - ABB and Silver Spring completed successful interoperability testing of the ABB COM600 substation computer and PCD recloser device with Silver Spring's Smart Energy Network, integrating distribution automation, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) and AMI capabilities onto a single smart grid platform.

o Elster - ABB and Elster developed a new loss detection application permitting utilities to operate their network more efficiently by pinpointing system losses or loads that are not metered. ABB and Elster also announced the development of a new revenue grade medium voltage (MV) metering node for MV monitoring.

o Sensus - ABB and Sensus demonstrated system interface of the ABB Network Manager Distribution Management System (DMS) and COM600 distribution substation controller with Sensus' FlexNet® technology and iCon A meter, for advanced smart grid applications.

o Trilliant Incorporated - ABB and Trilliant demonstrated successful interoperability of Trilliant's SecureMesh(TM) communications network with ABB's Station Automation and Protection products, providing broadband, low-latency networking integration with advanced automation products for smart grid applications for utilities' smart grid rollouts.

o Itron - ABB and Itron are in the beginning stages of interoperability testing now.

"Our collaboration with many of the world-class AMI and metering technology providers are moving the smart grids closer to reality for utilities and their consumers," said Gary Rackliffe, vice president of Smart Grids at ABB. "We look forward to continuing successful, innovative interoperability between distribution automation, grid management and AMI technologies with our strategic partners in the ongoing build-out of the smart grid network."

This announcement was made today as part of activities at GridWeek 2009, a major smart grid conference held this week in Washington, DC.
