Program Addressing Dramatic Shortfall of U.S. Engineers Featured in New AASHTO Video

Civil engineers are problem solvers; using math, science, and computer modeling to design everything from highways and giant bridges to the numerous high-tech solutions to improve safety and air quality, and reduce traffic congestion.

Unfortunately, too few young people are going into the profession and, according to a Bureau of Labor Statistics study, America could face a shortfall of 160,000 engineers by 2016.

AASHTO launched the Transportation and Civil Engineering (TRAC) program back in 1991 to
begin addressing the anticipated shortage. Now, with the comprehensive math and science program being used in more than 20 states, AASHTO has taken the additional step of producing a new video.

The video features students from several states who've learned about civil engineering through TRAC's National Bridge Design and Build Competition. In the video, state winners vie for top national prizes and bragging rights.

"TRAC continues to be a win, win situation," said John Horsley, AASHTO Executive Director. "Students are learning math and science in new ways. The classes are fun and engaging; giving students a clear picture of how civil engineering works in the real world. I also like the fact that civil engineers from our state departments of transportation are right there in the classroom, volunteering and answering
questions."

If you're interested in the TRAC program, watch the video and find out more at www.trac.net or visit www.youtube.com/aashtovideo to see the TRAC video and other AASHTO video presentations.

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is the "Voice of Transportation" representing State Departments of Transportation in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. AASHTO is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association serving as a catalyst for excellence in transportation.
