AAMA Updates Document Addressing Thermal Cycling of Exterior Walls

SCHAUMBURG, IL - AAMA 501.5-07, a technical specification covering test methods for thermal cycling, has been released by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA). According to John Lewis, AAMA Technical Director, the revamped 8-page document, first published in 1998 and titled Test Method for Thermal Cycling of Exterior Walls, includes several updates.

"The most significant changes were to Section 5.6, including adding additional requirements for the painted tape used to affix the thermocouples to the test specimen. The revised specification requires that 'the emissivity of the paint shall be similar to the emissivity of the test surface' to ensure the painted tape does not alter or influence the test results," according to Lewis.

Other updates were made to Section 1.0 in adding a reference to AAMA 1503 and clarifying that the document is not intended for use in condensation or dewpoint performance evaluation. The "Referenced Documents" section was also updated, as well as ensuring that all standard conversions also had metric equivalents.

The Test Method for Thermal Cycling of Exterior Walls is available through download, CD or paper copy at a cost of $12.00 for non-members and $6.00 for members.
