AAMA Updates Document Addressing Self Adhering Flashing

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - AAMA 711-07, a voluntary specification covering self adhering flashing, has been released by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA). According to John Lewis, AAMA technical director, the revamped 22-page document, first published in 2005 and titled Voluntary Specification for Self Adhering Flashing Used for Installation of Exterior Wall Fenestration Products, includes several updates.

This specification establishes the test methods and minimum performance requirements for self adhering flashing products that are used around the perimeter of exterior fenestration products. It also provides a method to determine the minimum width of the flashing products and to evaluate the influence of the environmental factors on the installation of self adhering flashing products applied under typical field conditions, per Lewis.

"In addition to various editorial changes, the most significant change was the addition of Sections 1.6, 4.7 and 4.8 covering the importance of proper installation and establishing that the manufacturer's instructions should be followed first and foremost," according to Lewis. Section A3.5 was created to relay caution due to wet or dirty surfaces and recommends contacting the manufacturer for further direction where this is unavoidable. Table A1, which may be completed by the flashing manufacturer, also was added to establish the temperature for adequate adhesion of self-adhering flashing to various substrates.

The Voluntary Specification for Self Adhering Flashing Used for Installation of Exterior Wall Fenestration Products is available through download, CD or paper copy at a cost of $16.00 for non-members and $8.00 for members.
