Press release date: June 1, 2009

June 2009. Alltec Corporation's ASC-6X Lightning Strike Counter continues to calculate localized lightning strikes with fury. This product has been specifically designed to monitor incidences of direct lightning strike to structures and outdoor equipment. The Lightning Strike Counter keeps track of the number of times that a facility or equipment has suffered a direct strike and can assist in determining the need for additional means of security such as grounding, surge suppression and lightning protection. Here's how it works...

At any moment there are almost two thousand thunderstorms in progress around the world. As a result the atmosphere endures around 100 lightning strikes per second, or about 8,640,000 times each day. Alltec's Lightning Strike Counter automatically counts and records these strikes for the collection of valuable data; this information is then used to enhance lightning protection security and increase the effectiveness of inspection and maintenance procedures. Some of its features include:

  •  Counts up to 999,999 events before automatically resetting!
  •  Completely waterproof and weather resistant
  •  Internally Protected
  •  Unit uses the tower, down conductor, or other metallic structure as an inductive shunt. The voltage drop across the shunt triggers the counting mechanism.
  •  Sensitivity is adjustable by altering the lead length of the connections
  •  Requires the use of #14 gauge wire for connections
  •  Can be tested with a momentary battery connection
  •  All ASC-6X strike counter units undergo strict factory testing

The ASC-6X Lightning Strike Counter is part of the Alltec Protection Pyramid(TM) and the company's full-facility protection approach for grounding, lightning and power quality problems. Verifying lightning strikes provides valuable information for the maintenance and safety of all structures and its occupants. Linking a lighting strike incident to a physical event, such as structural damage, equipment failure, or data loss may substantiate the need for additional earthing/grounding enhancement, surge protective devices (SPDs) and lightning protection equipment. The Alltec Protection Pyramid(TM) begins with the installation of a code compliant single-point low resistance/impedance grounding system sized to carry the full amplitude of a short circuit current safely to the ground. Next, surge protection devices are staged to dramatically filter the voltage, current and frequency surges. Finally, a well designed lightning protection system is created to protect against direct lighting strikes.
