Technical solutions will improve pipeline pump reliability, performance and energy efficiency

Houston, Texas, November 20, 2009 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, recently won an order as a part of the oil and gas NMPP (new multi project pipeline) Trunk Line Pumps project for Transnet Ltd. in South Africa.

The contract from GE Oil & Gas, consists of engineering services and electrical equipment. The scope of supply includes drives systems with medium voltage drives, transformers and medium voltage flame proof motors. The project is scheduled for completion in April 2011.

"This contract underscores ABB's capacity to provide comprehensive electrical system solutions and services for our oil and gas customers," said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB's Process Automation division. "This delivery will help to improve reliability and performance of the pipeline equipment, while maximizing energy efficiency and reducing operating costs."

ABB's delivery includes variable speed drive systems for each pump that provide more efficient and reliable operation, and use less energy than traditional fixed speed motors. They also work more effectively within the precise performance parameters of this application, causing less mechanical wear on the pump equipment.

ABB's ability to integrate with the existing automation system, as well as its local support in South Africa, helped to win this contract.

The NMPP project encompasses the replacement and expansion in capacity of the Durban to Johannesburg Pipeline (DJP) which transports refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel and jet fuel) from the two refineries in Durban, as well as imports of refined petroleum products.

ABB's Process Automation division delivers integrated solutions for control, plant optimization, and industry-specific application knowledge and services to help process industry customers worldwide meet their critical business needs in the areas of operational profitability, capital productivity, risk management and global responsibility. These industries include oil and gas, power, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, pulp and paper, metals, minerals, marine and turbocharging.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs more than 120,000 people.
