Marlin Steel
Marlin Steel Wire Products at forefront of BGE lighting conversion for small business
Marlin Steel Wire Products (www.MarlinWire.com ) of Baltimore is going to get greener in a way that will not require spending much green.
It's among the first companies to participate in a program in which BGE subsidizes 80 percent of the cost of upgrading lighting for small businesses. The conversion to more energy - efficient lighting will reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released by the utility's coal-fired power plants. The BGE Smart Energy Savers Program is part of a larger movement among power companies nationally to encourage more energy - efficient lighting for business users. Maryland is trying to reduce overall energy consumption by 15 percent by the year 2015 and BGE is implementing the program to make it happen.
Based on figures from the U.S. Department of Energy, the 165 tons of CO2 emissions reduced by the program would amount to the equivalent of carbon dioxide emitted from motor vehicles burning more than 18,700 gallons of gasoline, from nearly 6,900 propane-fueled barbeque grills or from the use of electricity in nearly 23 homes for an entire year.
"It will really help the environment. Over the next decade, this lighting package will reduce the amount of CO2 that our utility company will crank out by 165 tons," said Drew Greenblatt, president of Marlin, which designs and manufactures custom steel wire baskets..
The change will bring several benefits, Greenblatt said, including more pleasant lighting conditions for Marlin employees. Payback for the cost of the conversion will only take seven months, according to estimates from BGE. "Most companies will have a stunningly fast payback because BGE is subsidizing this at 80 percent," he said.
"The light bulbs mimic the light of the sun better so the lights inside feel more like sunlight and less like fluorescent lights from the old days," Greenblatt said. "Plus the light emitted is two or three times brighter than our current lights so the factory is more pleasant, we may have fewer accidents and the mood is better."
The new lighting will be installed at night this week so it won't interrupt the factory's operations, he said.
