IDI Composites International

Release date: May 27, 2009

NOBLESVILLE, IN (USA) - IDI Composites International, the premier global formulator and manufacturer of thermoset molding compounds, has an agreement to provide high-performance composite material for hand guards for the military's M-16 rifle. IDI's M-211 Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) offers excellent strength-to-weight ratio and outstanding physical, chemical, and thermal properties to withstand a wide range of harsh environments.

Made from engineered resins with fiberglass reinforcement, M-211 composite absorbs and dissipates the extreme heat generated by the M-16 rifle's high-volume fire capability. M-211 is also lightweight and impervious to a variety of environmental conditions such as heat, cold, moisture, UV, and corrosive chemicals, making it suitable for all military missions.

In addition to the M-16 rifle hand guard, SMC from IDI can be used for other military uses, such as automotive body panels, high-strength electrical parts, HVAC components, small watercraft, power generation systems, corrosive material storage, and various structural components due to its excellent mechanical and dielectric properties, as well as surface appearance. SMC can be formulated in a variety of colors and properties, and can be molded into complex shapes.
