BASF Catalysts LLC

Release date: November 13, 2008

ISELIN, NJ, November 13, 2008 - At the recent 2008 SAE Commercial Vehicles Congress in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Ken Voss, Senior Research Associate at BASF Catalysts, presented BASF's new copper-zeolite SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst, which provides more than 90 percent NOx (nitrogen oxides) removal for on-road and off-road heavy-duty diesel vehicles.

This new copper-based SCR catalyst is one of several technology platforms BASF has developed to meet the significantly growing demand for heavy-duty diesel emission-control technologies. BASF SCR catalysts comprise a catalytically active component coated on a ceramic honeycomb. When a reductant, such as BASF's AdBlue® urea solution, is added to the system, the catalyst promotes a chemical reaction that converts NOx into harmless water and nitrogen.

BASF is very well-positioned for the heavy duty diesel catalyst market, which is an important growth area driven by increasingly stringent emissions regulations worldwide. For example, the next significant new regulations will be for the North America and European on-road segments (U.S. 2010; Euro 5 starting this year; Euro 6 in 2013).

BASF has already been awarded significant new business for providing catalysts to meet these new regulations.

BASF Catalysts originally pioneered SCR technology in the late 1960s for stationary-source applications, such as power-generating and industrial manufacturing facilities. The company continues to be a major supplier to the stationary-source market.
