Release date: September 19, 2008

Thought-leaders tackle Smart Grid future at annual conference

RALEIGH, N.C., Sept. 19 -- GridWeek 2008 is an annual four-day gathering of thought leaders from around the world to address the future of the Smart Grid. Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc. supports GridWeek as a Gold Sponsor. GridWeek provides an opportunity for organizations focused on Smart Grid solutions to convene in collaborative sessions with leaders advancing the Smart Grid revolution. The conference will be held September 22-25 at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, DC.

Highlights of the conference include an opening plenary session on Tuesday with noted author and president of The Foundation on Economic Trends Jeremy Rifkin, a keynote address by U.S. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman on Wednesday, and Thursday's closing session featuring Pulitzer Prize winning author Thomas Friedman, who will sign copies of his latest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded, released September 8, after the session. Galvin Electricity Initiative founder Robert W. Galvin will autograph copies of his book at a Tuesday evening reception at the National Press Club.

Rod Fickler, manager of business development and mergers and acquisitions for Siemens' transmission and distribution services group, will participate as a panelist discussing leveraging information to improve enterprise asset management.

Siemens will also participate in a media roundtable on Wednesday addressing how the Smart Grid connects renewable energy sources to the electrical grid.

"The future of the Smart Grid is of vital importance to the U.S. because it affects the way of life that Americans have come to enjoy and expect," said Wes Sylvester, Siemens Power Transmission & Distribution, Inc. director of distribution solutions. "Siemens is among the first engineering innovators in the world, and we have taken a leadership role in developing the technology strategy necessary to make the Smart Grid dream a reality," he added. Sylvester serves as Siemens' representative on several Smart Grid committees including GridWise(TM) Alliance and Intelligrid.
