MAG Industrial Automation Systems

Release date: May 1, 2008

IMTS Advance News for MAG Industrial Automation Systems Booth No. A-8218

New Dimensions in Flexibility: Invitation-only preview of new high-volume horizontal machining center will also take place within the MAG Powertrain exhibit.

May 2008, Port Huron, MI - Manufacturing system builder MAG Powertrain will feature its automotive engine and transmission component machining technology at IMTS '08, including CGI (compacted graphite iron) machining, MQL (minimum quantity lubrication) machining, Agile Systems and the Global Transfer Line.

A new horizontal machining center platform will also be previewed on an invitation-only basis in an enclosed area within the MAG Industrial Automation Systems exhibit (booth A-8218/8232). The new modular platform provides a unique dimension in flexibility with an industry-leading array of options, including manual or automatic loading, ballscrew or linear motor drives, multiple 4th and 5th axis formats, and three different control system options.

MAG Powertrain continues to evolve machine and cutting tool technology for faster machining of tough-to-cut CGI, capitalizing on early system successes that began in the late 1990s. Special cutters incorporate rotating inserts to reduce heat and friction that can cause premature tool failure.

Engineering experts from MAG Powertrain will be on hand to discuss MQL systems that have significantly improved plant environmental factors and reduced machine acquisition costs by up to 20 percent. MQL systems can eliminate the need for a coolant system, along with the cost of coolant and non-value added operations (including the washing and drying of chips).

Two distinct manufacturing system design approaches for the automotive industry will be exhibited at IMTS: Agile Systems and the Global Transfer Line. Agile Systems consist of robust CNC machines and inter-machine part handling automation, built for continuous production. Agile Systems produce engine blocks, cylinder heads, transmission cases and other parts using either parallel or sequential processes. The systems are easily expandable or reconfigurable for volume increases or additional product features.

Global Transfer Lines are modular, highly-standardized systems with lower acquisition costs. They are preferred for high-volume production in operations where changes are largely minor and/or infrequent. Total system life-cycle costs are minimized, ergonomics are optimized, and delivery times are reduced to meet aggressive automotive industry timelines.
