Press Release

Hollaender Mfg. Co., The

Release date: May 5, 2008

Hollaender® Installs New "Speed-Rail® over Broadway"

CINCINNATI, OH (May 05, 2008) - Hollaender® Manufacturing was recently chosen by Douglas Lister Architects to supply the Astor Court Apartments, located at 89th Street and Broadway in New York City, with approximately 1,000 linear feet of aluminum railing with infill panels for the roof of this historic Manhattan apartment building.

Prior to the installation, Astor Court, built in 1916, still had its original two-line handrail on the outside perimeter of the roof. However, New York City's building code required a new railing be installed with infill panels that would prevent anything larger than 4 inches in diameter from passing through.

A major challenge in this project was the lack of drawings, showing elevation and level changes. With Hollaender's modular Speed-Rail® system however, construction crews were able to install a post and three-rail framework initially, then measure each bay for specific dimensions of the required infill panels. The entire framework was produced, delivered and installed within six weeks of the order date. Infill panels were produced, delivered and installed eight weeks later. This two-stage installation process was simplified with the use of Speed-Rail #17EMO tab fittings that were installed "loose " at the time of initial installation, then used to attach the infill panels with bolts and acorn nuts.

Speed-Rail is the company's flexible and simple-to-install slip-on pipe fitting system. Hollaender provides complete, ready to assemble systems including fittings and pipe, all according to customer specifications. Speed-Rail fittings come in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, and will accommodate five pipe sizes ranging from ¾" IPS (actual OD of 1.05") to 2" IPS (actual OD of 2.375"). The fittings are made of a corrosion resistant and high strength aluminum alloy. Finish options range from standard mill to stressed industrial to powder coated.
