Press Release

Tyco Electronics/Raychem.

Release date: May 6, 2008

Tyco Electronics Offers Free, Downloadable HDMI(TM) 1.3 Whitepaper to Help Designers Add ESD Protection without Sacraficing Performance

Whitepaper Describes Industry's First ESD and Overcurrent Reference Layout for HDMI 1.3 Interfaces Based on Passive Protection Devices

MENLO PARK, CA - May 6, 2008 - Tyco Electronics now offers a free, downloadable whitepaper detailing the benefits of its reference layout that incorporates ESD and overcurrent protection for HDMI(TM) 1.3 interfaces. Available at www.circuitprotection.com/hdmi/, the whitepaper describes how designers can use the reference layout to meet the HDMI 1.3 specification, provide IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection, and speed time to market.

Titled, "HDMI ESD Protection Without Sacrificing Performance -- Adding ESD Protection to HDMI, Even at 3.4GHz, Just Became Easier," the whitepaper explores the requirements and pitfalls of designing ESD protection into HDMI 1.3 systems. For instance, the HDMI 1.3 specification doubles the previous data rate to 3.4Gbps per differential signal pair, posing challenges in implementing solid board design with low capacitance to ensure adequate signal integrity. The whitepaper describes how Tyco Electronics' HDMI 1.3 reference layout offers designers a solution that reduces the need for making tradeoffs between size, ESD protection performance, and ease of implementation.

"Adding ESD protection to HDMI 1.3 systems doesn't have to be a complex and confusing task -- if the proper solution is found," said Patrick Hibbs, Tyco Electronics' Raychem Circuit Protection Marketing Manager. "Our HDMI 1.3 reference layout can help designers focus their time and resources on developing critical and differentiating features, rather than worrying about how ESD will affect HDMI performance."

Tyco Electronics recently introduced the industry's first ESD and overcurrent protection reference layout for HDMI 1.3 based on passive protection devices. Developed in conjunction with Efficere, Inc., a leader in high-speed interface design, the reference layout meets and exceeds the HDMI 1.3 specifications for operation at 3.4Gbps for Impedance (TDR), Data Eye, and Far End Crosstalk.
