Telecom Reform Legislation Continues to Deliver Investment to Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS, March 17 -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T), the world's largest communications company, announced today that in 2008 the company plans to invest more than $65 million in the Indiana network to expand wireless coverage. AT&T plans to upgrade cell sites with third-generation (3G) technology as well as construct new cell sites throughout the state.
This year, AT&T plans to enhance network capabilities in the state by:
o Improving coverage and capacity in Lafayette (Purdue University), Bloomington (Indiana University), Fort Wayne and South Bend.
o Launching 3G service in Lafayette, South Bend, Fort Wayne and by expanding the Indianapolis footprint.
o Upgrading cell sites and emergency generators throughout the state to provide cell site power in the event of a commercial power outage.
"Providing our customers with high-quality voice and data coverage and the ability to communicate everywhere they live and work -- that is our goal," said Brian Ducharme, vice president and general manager for AT&T's wireless operations in Indiana. "This investment will help provide broader coverage and enable faster speeds, giving our customers an even better experience with our products."
AT&T has delivered dramatic changes in Indiana through the introduction of its 3G wireless broadband network. This year, AT&T will expand its wireless 3G network in the U.S. to more than 80 additional cities, including Lafayette, South Bend and Fort Wayne. This planned expansion will bring AT&T 3G wireless services to nearly 350 leading U.S. markets by the end of 2008, including all of the top 100 cities.
"When we passed our telecom reform bill in 2006, the intent was to encourage investment in advanced technologies across Indiana," said state Sen. Brandt Hershman. "Several providers have responded in meaningful ways, and this expansion of wireless broadband services will bring new choices and greater access to Indiana consumers."
AT&T's 3G wireless network makes it possible for customers to quickly access feature-rich wireless content on their 3G handsets, including videos, games, pictures and the latest music, entertainment, news and weather, through MEdia(TM) Net, the company's mobile Internet portal. AT&T 3G customers also can take advantage of Video Share, a first-of-its-kind technology in the U.S. that allows users to share live video during a wireless call. The AT&T 3G network also offers laptop users the ability to send and receive large files or access the Internet, their company's intranet or corporate e-mail from anywhere within the 3G network with AT&T BroadbandConnect.
"Gov. Daniels and the Indiana General Assembly deserve tremendous credit for making our ongoing investment a reality across the state," said George Fleetwood, president of AT&T Indiana. "By updating our telecom laws, they have made Indiana a very attractive place for us to invest. And the more we spend on our network, the more our customers benefit."
AT&T's wireless network is based on Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) technology, the most open and widely used network platform in the world.
