BorgWarner Expands in Hungary Demand for Turbochargers Continues to Boost Production
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Feb. 25 -- Driven by growing European demand for turbochargers, BorgWarner (NYSE: BWA) expanded its facility in Oroszlany, Hungary, about 50 miles (80 km) from Budapest. The new 50,000-square-foot (4,650-square-meter) building will provide added manufacturing, training, development and administrative space. With an area now totaling over 145,000 square feet (13,500 square meters), the four-building campus employs about 600 people who produce turbochargers that equip over 50 car models for customers in Europe, China, India and Mexico.
"Fuel efficiency, performance and environmental friendliness are the three leading factors in engine boosting," said Roger Wood, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo & Emissions Systems. "Our larger facility will provide ample opportunity to expand existing product lines and introduce new technologies and products to meet growing demand in Europe." At the opening ceremonies, BorgWarner hosted executives, suppliers and government officials, including American Ambassador April Foley and Hungary's State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy Geza Egyed.
BorgWarner expects increased demand for its advanced turbocharging technologies as OEMs around the world work to achieve lower emissions, better fuel efficiency and improved performance. Since the plant in Hungary first opened, the operation has increased annual production from 40,000 units in 2000 to 1.5 million units in 2007. To meet future demands, the facility's new assembly lines can adapt to meet specific customer requirements.
