Kontron America

Release date: October 16, 2007

NMS Communications' MG 7000A ATCA Media Processing Blade Demonstrates Interoperability with Kontron Portfolio of Open Modular Solutions

Interoperability of ATCA Solutions between NMS and Kontron Enables Rapid, Cost-Effective Development of Highly Available Communications Systems

SAN DIEGO/ FRAMINGHAM, MA, October 16, 2007 - Kontron, a leading global provider of open modular solutions for the communications market, and NMS Communications (NASDAQ: NMSS), a leading provider of applications and platforms for value-added services, jointly demonstrated interoperability between the NMS's MG 7000A AdvancedTCA media processing blade and Kontron's AdvancedTCA processor and switch platform elements at the Connect Conference in Boston this month.

The demonstration illustrated the high availability features built into the MG 7000A, as well as the ability of the Kontron AT8020 AdvancedTCA processor board and the Kontron AT8902 Base/Fabric Switch to work with redundant MG 7000a blades to switch a live IVR application to a standby MG blade upon application failure. The Kontron processor node board was used to run NMS's Natural Access MX client software and duplicate the media stream state on the back-up MG blade.

The MG 7000A, the first commercially available full-sized ATCA media processing blade features a powerful combination of high-speed IP packet handling, four Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, high-density DSP voice media processing power, and optional T1/E1/J1 interfaces, making it the perfect choice for a wide range of network-based applications including IP media servers and enhanced service platforms.

The Kontron AT8020 features two Dual-Core IntelŽ XeonŽ processors LV 2.0 GHz and support for two AdvancedMC modules, enabling a multitude of design options for compute intensive media-driven, mobile-IMS network elements. For the demonstration, the Kontron AT8020 is populated with the Kontron AM4500 AdvancedMC SATA module used to store the Natural Access MX client software. For switching functionality, the Kontron AT8902 AdvancedTCA Base and Fabric Switch board was employed. This PICMG 3.0/3.1 compliant switch is built to support two Mid-Size or two Full-Size AdvancedMC modules, and is the ideal high-end switch platform that provides maximum design flexibility for a wide range of wireless and wireline network applications, and uses leading-edge switching technology for full wire-speed throughput during all load conditions for any network topology.

"We're pleased that our MG 7000A have been successfully tested with Kontron's Open Modular Solutions," said Jamie Warter, vice president of marketing, communications platforms, NMS. "When developers use NMS's MG 7000A and Kontron's ATCA offerings, they can have the confidence that they are working with leaders in the field while reaping the high availability benefits of this new ATCA technology."

"We are very pleased about NMS' decision to validate their new ATCA media processing blade within one of Kontron's proven open modular platform products. Such interoperability testing is one of the main goals of the Communication Platform Trade Association (CP-TA), which helps telecom and network equipment developers to fully realize the powerful capabilities of AdvancedTCA," said Benoit Robert, executive director, product management, at Kontron. "For developers to rely on vendors such as Kontron and NMS for all their hardware integration and interoperability needs helps them to increase their focus on their unique application development efforts."

About Kontron Open Modular Solutions:

Kontron shortens the application design process by ensuring that each open modular building block is fully interoperable and designed to be both the right technology and the right architecture to suit specific development needs. Kontron pre-integrated open modular solutions offer best-in-class carrier-grade hardware platforms, combined with carrier-grade OS and HA middleware solutions. Kontron offers a diverse selection of AdvancedTCA processor, hub and carrier boards plus complementary field-replaceable AdvancedMC processor, storage, and I/O modules. Kontron also builds all of its AdvancedTCA products to be 'AMC Everywhere' enabled, offering support for AdvancedMC modules in its processor, hub and carrier products. This is a major factor in providing TEMs and NEPs with the unprecedented flexibility to design new applications and increase economies of scale by freeing up valuable AdvancedTCA system slots for other payload blades.
