Carus Corporation

LaSalle/Peru, IL - Carus Corporation has installed an innovative water treatment system in their plant as a result of an initiative to save energy and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The new reverse osmosis (RO) system has been operational for 10 months, and there have been substantial reductions in energy and chemicals used, as well as a reduction in CO2 emissions.

Carus uses a state-of-the-art boiler in the process of manufacturing its products. All water entering the boiler must be treated. The old treatment system had a series of water softeners and filters to remove impurities from the water prior to the boiler. Even with this treatment, there was still a significant amount of solids collecting in the boiler. To control the build-up of solids, approximately 25% of the boiler water was lost during operation of the boiler. Because the boiler water is hot, this represents a sizeable amount of lost energy.

With the new RO system in place, the process is much more environmentally friendly. It consists of a series of softeners and filters, the RO systems, and a water storage tank. Because the level of impurities in the RO-treated water is minimal, water lost during boiler operation is reduced, resulting in less energy consumption. Ralph Moshage, Engineering Manager, and responsible for the new unit, said, "The new system has now been operational for almost a year, and the results are impressive. The quantity of chemicals required to treat the water have been reduced by approximately 50%. In addition, the amount of water lost in the process has been reduced by more than 95%. With this investment, Carus has significantly reduced our impact on the environment by saving water and energy."

Carus Corporation, founded in LaSalle, IL, in 1915, is an environmental company that manufactures and provides permanganates, phosphates, and base metal catalysts to the Water, Remediation, and Industrial markets for environmental applications. Carus Corporation is a member of the American Chemistry Council and an active participant in the industry's award-winning Responsible CareŽ initiative, working to make life better, healthier, and safer through chemistry.
